Abstract

The deviation of the force fields of NbF 5 and SbF 5 from those of other pentahalides (XY 5, D 3h) of group V elements has been studied in correlation with path-length and bond-charge parameters, ionic character, normal covalent stretching force constants and radius ratio. There is a clear indication that NbF 5 and SbF 5 may have 6-coordinate cis-fluorine bridged structure in the liquid phase.
