Abstract

A new species of Cardiocarpus Brongniart is described from the Lower—Middle Pennsylvania of Kentucky. The integument is divided into four distinct layers: a sarcotesta, sclerotesta, a layer between the sclerotesta and endotesta, and the endotesta. The most characteristic layer is the endotesta which consists of large thin-walled cells. The vascular system consists of a single strand that enters the base of the seed and extends distally to form a massive chalazal platform. From this basal strand, two lateral traces arise that extend distally through the integument (sarcotesta) in the primary plane of the seed. Stages in the development of the megagametophyte are discussed together with a characterization of post-pollination ovule enlargement.
