Abstract

A pluralist theory of literary genres is outlined in which genres are identified as relatively strong or weak according to the presence of common formal, thematic and attitudinal features. Wilderness literature is isolated as an instance of a strongly identifiable genre, previously unrecognized, and the unity of its features demonstrated. Four philosophically neutral criteria are proposed for a critical decision to employ genre analysis in context of viewing a work in its full literariness.
