Abstract

Most authors presently agree [1–3] that the stoichiometry of proton release by the oxygen-evolving system (OES) follows the 1, 0, 1, 2 pattern during the S0–S4 oxidation steps. The experiments reported here suggest that this oscillating pattern actually accounts for only about half the protons resulting from water oxidation, the other half being evenly released upon each of the S-transitions. Therefore, the true pattern would be close to 1, 1/2, 1, 3/2.
