Abstract

It is shown that there is no contradiction between « energy conservation » and the continuous creation of matter in an expanding universe. By applying Noether’s theorem to the substratum, a modified conservation law is obtained which accounts automatically for the creation of matter. The substratum is treated as a relativistic fluid and the solution of the equations of motion determines the characteristics of the substratum and gives a picturesque interpretation to the process of creation of matter. An equivalent model within the framework of general relativity is set up.
