Abstract

The size-dependent static polarizability of small sodium particles is calculated within a non-self-consistent spherical jellium model. The results are compared both with recent experimental data and with recent theoretical work based on a completely self-consistent jellium model. The non-self-consistently obtained polarizabilities agree better with the experimental values than those obtained in a completely self-consistent way. The reasons for this are discussed and it is outlined how lattice effects could improve the agreement between the results of a self-consistent theory and the experimental data.
