Abstract

Based on the International Institute of Welding's Handbook on the Ultrasonic Examination of Austenitic Welds, which has been published in English, French, German and Japanese, a review is made of the ultrasonic properties of austenitic and austenitic-ferritic dissimilar welds and of testing techniques and procedures. Furthermore, the calculated (frequency-dependent) propagation coefficients for longitudinal and transverse waves are compared with experimental values. In particular, the measured apparent attenuation of ultrasound in austenitic weld metal is analysed. The influence of attenuation and backscattering on the signal to grain noise ratio is estimated. Based on these results, an optimization of the testing technique and procedure is described. Results achieved during mechanized testing of welded specimens are presented.
