Abstract

The standard Gibbs energy of formation of CoO was determined by the galvanic cell (−) Pt, Fe(s), ‘FeO’(s)//ZrO2 (partially stabilised//CoO(s), Co(s), Pt (+) with CaO or Y2O3) in the temperature range 1052–1488 K. The results are compared with earlier reported values. An equation for the standard Gibbs energy change for the reactions Co(s) +½O2(g) = CoO(s) and Co(s) +O(Co, fcc) = CoO(s) is recommended based on the present data.
