Abstract
A new form of nonlinear Schrödinger equation in three-spatial dimensions is deduced for a plasma consisting of both positive and negative ions placed in a uniform magnetic field. Such an equation essentially describes the space evolution of a nonlinear drift wave. We have used it to ascertain the extent of self focusing of a drift wave in such a plasma. The zones of transversal stability are obtained numerically and their variation with respect to various plasma parameters are studied.
