Abstract

The positive circumferential flow is the main cause of seal instability in turbomachines. This paper proposed an annular gas seal with self-adaptive jet slots (SJS). The anti-swirl jet driven by the pressure difference between the seal domains is utilized to control the circumferential flow. The circumferential flow development and rotordynamic coefficients of the SJS are numerically calculated and compared with those of the labyrinth seal with typical anti-swirl methods (swirl brake and shunt injection). Results show that the SJS has the best anti-swirl effect on circumferential flow among the studied seals, thus showing the best stability. The leakage performance of the SJS is also improved due to the fluidic barrier induced by the anti-swirl jet.
