Abstract

ABSTRACT The findings of an assessment of state-of-the-art reviews of leisure studies and the results of an international survey of leisure scholars provide the basis for a consideration of future directions for the field. A simple descriptive model of change is employed to structure suggested directions for leisure studies into the next decade. Principal conclusions are that: priority must be given to the development of leisure theory; greater recognition must be given to the validity of alternative research methods to the quantitative survey; leisure scholars must pursue closer and stronger ties to their parent social science disciplines; and leisure studies must pay greater attention than heretofore to broad social trends when establishing its research agendas.
