Abstract

In this issue of Pediatrics, Dolan and colleagues compare the injured drivers of three-wheel all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) with those injured in four-wheel ATVs. Although it was surprising to learn that injuries sustained in four-wheel vehicles were as severe as those sustained in three-wheel vehicles, it is no surprise that deficiencies in personal judgment were among the most frequently identified contributing causes of injury. In the study, "immature judgment" was identified as a contributing cause in 15 of the 36 ATV injuries. Lack of parental supervision (ie, poor judgment on the part of an adult) was a contributing factor in 10 incidents and a possible factor in an additional 10 incidents.
