Abstract

The systematic bias due to galaxy evolution in the red-shift volume measurement of the cosmological deceleration parameter q(0) is investigated. Galaxies are classified into five types, E/SO, Sab, Sbc, Scd, and Sdm, which evolve with different star formation histories. The red-shift volume test in the light of galaxy evolution is considered by using the type-dependent evolution models by Arimoto and Yoshii. It is found that for z less than 1, the bias Delta q is mostly equal to -0.2 if the parameters for local luminosity function of galaxies are adopted in the analysis. To determine q(0) within this accuracy it is indispensable to obtain a sample of redshifts for galaxies as deep as m(lim) = about 23 mag at 650 nm or m(lim) = about 24 mag at 800 nm. 11 refs.
