Abstract

The radiolytic reduction of Fe III-EDTA induced by OH radical attack in aerated aqueous solutions is discussed and compared with the results observed earlier by Broszkiewicz ( Int. J. Radiat. Phys. Chem. 1972, 4, 117) on the effect of several organic additives on the radiation-induced reduction of Fe 3+ in aqueous solution. It has been argued that the radical formed through OH radical attack at the ligand does not form peroxide in the presence of oxygen, but the odd electron at the ligand site is readily transferred to the central metal ion of the metal chelate in question.
