Abstract

The new wind resistant design manual for highway bridges has been required recently in Japan. The working group was organized in the Japan Road Association in 1984 prepare the manual. The working group was reformed into the Wind Resistant Design Committee in 1986, and the first draft of the Proposed Wind Resistant Design Manual for Highway Bridges was completed. The contents of the Manual are as follows. 1. 1. GENERAL REMARKS 2. 2. GUIDELINE OF WIND RESISTANT DESIGN 3. 3. WIND PROPERTIES USED IN DESIGN (Basic Wind Speed, Design Wind Speed, Intensity of Turbulence, etc.) 4. 4. DESIGN WIND LOAD 5. WIND-INDUCED VIBRATIONS OF BRIDGE DECK (Prediction, Evaluation, Method of Alleviation, Flutter, Galloping, Vortex-Induced Vibrations, Gust Responses) 6. 6. WIND-INDUCED VIBRATIONS OF TOWERS AND BRIDGE MEMBERS 7. 7. WIND RESISTANT DESIGNS AT ERECTION STAGES 8. 8. WIND TUNNEL TESTING METHODS In this paper, the existing method for wind resistant design of bridges is outlined first, then follows some of the features of the Manual.
