Abstract

The significance of new discoveries and data on the prehistory of Western Melanesia from the Admirality Islands is discussed. The implication is thus that the origin of pottery in western Melanesia pre-dates the settlement of the Admiralties, and that its production by socially, not culturally, restricted specialists may be as old.
