Abstract

We prove that the Prasad-Sommerfield dyon (monopole) solution for an SU(2) Yang-Mills field coupled with an SU(2) Higgs multiplet can be associated to a certain minimal immersion in S3 (≃SU(2)) i.e. it has a differential-geometric content similar to that of self-dual solutions for the pure SU(2) Yang-Mills field. Implications of this result as well as possibilities to extend it to higher gauge groups are discussed.
