Abstract

The limitations on the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) imposed by the degeneracy of atomic levels are considered. The dependence of the EIT-induced polarization rotation of the weak probe field on the characteristics of the resonant transitions and that of the control field is studied. The conditions for the 90∘-rotation without absorption are discussed.
