Abstract

Plane-strain condition and crack stability are studied for chevron-notched specimen used for K Ic and WOF determination. Specimen-size criteria required for valid K Ic determination in parallel with ASTM E399 are established. A crack-stability criterion based on R- curve and specimen ligament effects is also proposed. The results of the present analysis are applied to a number of literature data and various cases are examined and discussed. The implications on the testing of ceramics at elevated temperatures and on the validity of WOF measurement are addressed.
