Abstract

Wesson has proposed a five-dimensional theory of gravity where the fifth dimension is a parametrization of rest mass. In this paper we investigate the spacetime projection of this theory and point out its scalar-vector-tensor nature. A Brans-Dicke theory withω=0 is shown to appear as a special case of Wesson's theory. It is pointed out that the task of constructing a realistic gravitational theory according to the scheme suggested by Wesson meets with serious difficulties.
