Abstract

This paper presents a closed-form solution for the peak acceleration in an infinite beam as a response to a half-cycle sine pulse excitation. The limits of its validity for a finite length beam are discussed. Numerical and experimental results are presented for a drilling collar where the excitation of shell modes may lead to underestimating the maximum acceleration if beam theory is used. A condition is suggested to decide if beam theory is appropriate for thick cylinders and the contribution from shell modes can be neglected.
