Abstract
The validity of the parallel axis theorem for nuclear moments of inertia is examined within the framework of the cranking model. It is shown that this theorem applies only when a requirement of self-consistency between potential and density distribution is imposed. In this case, the theorem follows as a consequence of a gauge invariance property of the cranking model Schrodinger equation.
