The recent discovery of Papaloizou and Pringle that fluid rings are dynamically unstable against global, nonaxisymmetric perturbations if of great importance to the theory of accretion disks. However, before these disks can be proved to be stable or unstable, substantial theoretical progress along the lines scketched in this lecture must be achieved.
