Abstract

In the usual treatments of quantum electromagnetic transitions in the dipole approximation, the Coulomb gauge is used. I will show that it is possible to treat the problem without using any gauge condition by using the newly developed method of Parisi-Wu stochastic quantum field theory. This result helps clarify the P·A versus E·r controversy in quantum optics.
