Abstract The application of Bahcall and Peebles's statistical test for the origin of the absorption lines found in quasar spectra has been extended. The test has been carried out by using several model universes and different values of z , the cutoff redshift. Any conclusion about the validity of the cosmological origin of the absorption lines is seen to depend, in the case of multiple redshifts, upon z and the cosmological model.
