Abstract

Most of the studies on the optimum design of shells have hitherto used the membrane shell theory, but it is well known that the bending shell theory should be applied to the cases of shells subjected to repeated loads. The bending shell theory for the general axisymmetric shells subjected to axisymmetric loads has already been established [1, 2], and also it has been shown that the fundamental differential equations of the above mentioned problem can be solved numerically by the finite difference method [3]. Then, the next step is to consider the optimum shapes of various axisymmetric shells.
