Abstract

Abstract In various parts of South Africa the author has observed colluvial deposits, of widespread occurrence and often of imposing thickness, reclining on lower slopes of hills and valleY-Sides and on pedIment surfaces. They are clearly distinguishable from river terrace gravels, although in some cases they are derived from high-standing riverine sediments. They are stable and fixed by vegetation and are at present being dissected by stream action. They are very susceptible to gully erosion. A tentative suggestion of past “pluvial” conditions is offered for consideration to explain the apparent fossil nature and origin of the slope colluvial deposits in the areas mentioned and possibly other areas as well.
