Abstract

The concept of the significance of a signal in presence of background in experiment is widely used in data analysis in high-energy physics. It is shown that when comparing pairs independent samples obtained from one population (Poisson flow of events), the distribution of estimates of the significance is asymptotically standard normal distribution.
