Abstract

The predictions of non-relativistic theory for elastic ed scattering with a recent version of the Paris potential and using the modified dispersion approach for the deuteron electromagnetic form factors, polarisation vector and tensor are studied. The dependence of all the quantities mentioned above on the choice of the nucleon form factor, in particular of the least known neutron electric form factor, is analysed. It is shown that a good description of the experimental data on elastic deuteron form factors up to Q2<or approximately=8 (GeV/c)2 may be obtained within the framework of a purely non-relativistic approach. Moreover, the values GEn(Q2) extracted from the data on elastic ed scattering at small Q2 lead to good agreement between theory and experiment for the magnitude of the slope at zero GEn'(0). The importance of polarisation experiments in elucidating the role of relativistic effects, the contribution of 6q states, etc., are discussed.
