Abstract

SUMMARY In this paper an attempt is made to draw a distinction between the notion of the practical and the technical. Reference is made to Aristotle's concept of Phronesis and the related thought of the German philosopher, Hans-Georg Gadamer. The purpose of this is to retrieve a sense of social work practice which recognizes it as a form of practical, moral engagement, and not primarily as a matter of technique.
