Abstract
High fluence fast neutron irradiation of Al 2O 3 at 1000 K has been shown to produce ordered arrays of 45 Å objects as observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These can be postulated to be voids, high pressure oxygen inclusions, or aluminum colloids. Knight shift NMR and O 2 gas release measurements suggest (by elimination) that the features are voids, containing respectively less than 10% of the aluminum and 1% of the oxygen predicted by the alternative models. The implications of this conclusion in terms of production mechanisms are discussed.
