Abstract
Ribosomes are immunogenic particles with properties different to soluble antigens with regard to some aspects of their immunogenicity and antigenicity. Ribosome-specific antibodies were determined by quantitative precipitin test, tannic passive haemagglutination and micro-complement fixation. 1. (1) Antibodies against rat liver ribosomes produced in rabbits are in part of the IgM class. 2. (2) Formation of immunoprecipitates takes place only in presence of complement. Inactivated antisera and γ-globulins prepared by means of (NH 4) 2SO 4 do not form precipitates but show positive passive haemagglutination and quantitative complement fixation. 3. (3) In the range of the equivalence zone of the quantitative precipitin reaction only 60 per cent of the ribosomes tested were found in the immunoprecipitate. The remaining 40 per cent of ribosomes are bound in the form of soluble ribosome-antibody complexes. 4. (4) The antibody contents are higher in the soluble ribosome-antibody complexes than in the precipitated complexes.
