Abstract

We perform a steady state analysis of the current circuit between Io and the Jovian ionosphere, assuming that the current is carried by electrons accelerated through potential double layers in the Io flux tube. The circuit analysis indicates that electrons may be accelerated up to energies of several hundred keV. We also discuss several problems associated with the formation of double layers. The parallel potential drops decouple the flux tube from the satellite's orbital motion.
