Abstract

In Lebistes double cone inner segments, mitochondria apparently arise de novo at the vitreal end and mature in a vitreal-to-scleral gradient in the ellipsoid. Scleral-end mitochondria differentiate into oil drops in certain principal members of cone pairs. There are two ultrastructurally radically different types of oil drops both of which have mitochondrial origins.
