Abstract

1. Mitochondria of ovarian egg-cells of Leiognathus argenteum were observed.2. Selection of proper fixative solutions and staining procedures is necessary for each stage in the development of egg-cells.3. In young egg-cells, mitochondria are granular. In the stage just before yolk formation, threadlike mitochondria appear and gradually increase in later stages till the stage of active yolk formation, when all mitochondria have threadlike shape. After the yolk formation is completed, these threadlike mitochondria disappear and all mitochondria present are granular ones.4. In the stage just before yolk granules appear, mitochondria disappear from the portion of cytoplasm around the nucleus. When yolk granules have grown larger, mitochondria appear again in all parts of cytoplasm.
