Abstract

The behaviour of nuclei at high angular momenta is studied within the framework of many-body Greenfunctions. A theory is developed which can be applied to interacting Fermi-systems in strong external fields. In a qualitative calculation, using the semiclassical approximation, it is shown that at high angular momenta the groundstate band can nearly coincide with the first vibrational band, which corresponds to a breakdown of the usual RPA approximation. We also obtain the socalled “backbending” effect.
