Abstract

Recently published results on the extraction kinetics of copper by extractants of the hydroxyoxime type are discussed in terms of the possible rate controlling steps under conditions where mass transfer control is eliminated. The possibility of eliminating interfacial effects to measure the “true” chemically controlled rate of extraction is considered. This involves a relaxation technique at extractant concentrations below the critical level for interfacial packing at the interface. This possibility has been tested on the Nickel-SME 529-Diluent-ammonia-ammonium nitrate system, and from the preliminary results presented on the effect of stirring speed, increase in the extent of reaction and position of equilibrium on the rate of return to equilibrium it is concluded that the method is valid.
