Abstract

Abstract A study of the mechanical and magnetic hardening of the Alnicos has shown that two distinct mechanisms are at the origin of the two types of hardening. The considerable lag of the increase in coercive force with respect to that of hardness supports the hypothesis that single domain behaviour of a magnetic precipitate is the primary cause of the magnetic hardening in this alloy. The mechanical hardening on the other hand can be accounted for semiquantitatively by Cahn's evaluation of the stresses induced by spinodal decomposition.
