Abstract

In the basic experiment of the study on scoring of gear teeth, it is very important to clarify the flash temperature of tooth surface. The authors have clarified the effects of the amount of addendum modification on the temperature of tooth surface. In the present experiment, the gear running testing machine of the power circulation type was used. The contact point of a constantan pinion and a steel gear forms a junction of thermocouple, and the thermoelectric power was measured by oscilloscope. The following results were obtained. (1) The wave form of oscillogram is determined in accordance with the amount of addendum modification and it nearly coincides with the value of theoretical calculation. (2) So long as the amount of addendum modification is too large, the temperature of tooth surface becomes very high. At the most suitable amount of addendum modification, it becomes the lowest. (3) The flash temperature of hobbed teeth is higher than that of ground teeth. (4) The flash temperature increases in proportion to 1/2 to 3/4 power of circumferential speed, and that value is larger than the value presented by H. Blok. (5) The flash temperature becomes higher as the carrying load increases, but the rising rate of temperature is less than the rate presented by H.Blok.
