Abstract

AbstractMeasurements have been made of the rate of thermal polymerization of styrene by observation of the infrared absorption spectrum of polymerizing samples in infrared absorption cells at 100°C. No effect of cell thickness on polymerization rate was noted, and the rate obtained agrees well with previously published values. An infrared method for determination of residual styrene monomer in polystyrene is described, and its possible application to rate studies on systems at high per cent conversion is noted.
