Abstract

A method and apparatus have been developed which provide a means for the measurement of particle or droplet motions induced in a fluid medium induced by an applied magnetic field. Such motions are observed for particles which have a magnetic susceptibility; hence they are capable of phoretic (magnetophoretic) motion. Observations of magnetite suspensions indicate that in addition to the particle magnetization, the magnetophoretic mobility is dependent upon particle concentration, solution conditions, and the time exposed to solution (ageing). The method is applicabe to the determination of optimal solution conditions for the magnetic removal or recovery of many dispersed phases.
