Abstract
Abstract The paper addresses the meaning of the term probability as it is used in Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA). The use of two different interpretations of probability, the classical interpretation to describe random physical processes, and the subjectivist interpretation to represent uncertainty, is discussed within the contest of the PSA framework. Possible sources of confusion, largely resulting from a lack of clear definition of the scope and meaning of the analysis, are identified.
