Abstract

The Human Rights Covenants recognize that equal and inalienable derive from the inherent dignity of the human Human dignity perform two distinct roles: it is the source from which human rights are derived; it is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace. In international legal parlance human dignity is, first of all, a synonym for human worth, the inherent excellence of the human person as distinguished from any other living creature: it is the attribute of dignity which characterizes and typifies the human person. Secondly, human dignity is the source from which human rights and liberties are derived. Thirdly, human dignity is the goal to which the rule of human rights law aspires. As justice is - or ought to be - the purpose of all law, so is human dignity the compass or signpost by which human rights are - or ought to be - orientated.
