Abstract

Abstract The standard equation for maximum growth increment used in many forest gap simulation models includes an ad hoc term to decrease growth as tree size increases. A more satisfactory derivation based on a simple mechanistic assumption produces a simpler maximum growth equation. The two equations are compared using growth data for open-grown Pinus virginiana . The standard method for determining the growth rate parameter in this class of models gives an incorrect value for P. virginiana and should be superseded by more empirical methods wherever possible.
