Abstract

The luminescence characteristic of YF 3-Pr 3+ under vacuum ultraviolet and X-ray excitation are identical unlike that of LaF 3-Pr 3+. We postulate that under X-ray excitation the energy of the electron hole recombination (exciton) in YF 3 is resonant with the Pr 3+ 1S 0 state, while in LaF 3 the exciton efficiently populates the Pr 3+ 3P 0 state.
