Abstract

There is a renaissance of interest in the genetics of higher plants fueled in part by the likelihood of improvements in crop species through genetic engineering. This has emphasized the need for modern biologists to know more about the life history and organization of plants. This brief essay highlights some of the profound differences between higher plants and animals and addresses questions about the relationship between the generation of genomic variation and the developmental plan of higher plants.
