Abstract

In the works about P.A. Kulish’s language and his role in the history of the Ukrainian literary language there is no deep and profound analysis of the writer’s idiolect formation. For the most part, researchers of the language of P. Kulish limit themselves to the list of colorful North Ukrainian features that have affected the language of the texts of the outstanding author, an expressive Chernihiv native, a representative of the Seversky region. At the same time, the texts of Panteleimon Kulish also reflect less expressive Eastern Polissya dialectics, which, without a doubt, deserve attention, especially since it is about the peculiarities of the idiolect of the authoritative creator of the Ukrainian literary language. Actually, the proposed study is based to one of these little-studied northern Ukrainian markers of the Kulish language, based on a preliminary fundamental study of the writer’s idiolect in connection with his native Eastern Polissya dialect of the northern dialect. The proposed observation is part of a holistic study that is devoted to study of P.A. Kulish’s language due to the аestern Polissya dialect; the work is based on the primary sources (the texts published during the author’s life), where their phonetic, morphological and lexical characteristics are considered. In this work the experience of the researchers of T.H. Shevchenko’s language is taken into account. But it is stressed that the methodology of studying the writer’s idiolect used in the thesis was improved, that is connected with the increasing basic empirical foundation (the maps of the Ukrainian Language Atlas, dialectal speech recordings, personal observations). In particular, taking into account the evidence of dialect sources from the territory of Eastern Polish dialects of P. Kulish’s immediate linguistic environment, written monuments, as well as the linguistic and literary practice of that time, the phenomenon of the realization of the unstressed phoneme /o/ in the vowel [a] in individual word forms is analyzed, special attention is paid to borrowing; it was found that in fixing the representatives /о/ – /а/, P.O. Kulish mostly focused on the dialectal features of his environment: the author’s language, on the one hand, reflects the pronunciation [а] (о > а) characteristic of Eastern Polissya dialects, on the other hand, the manifestations of hyperic [о], synharmonism, and morphological alignment are less common here.
