Abstract

A homogeneous preparation of follicle-stimulating hormone was isolated from human pituitary glands by a procedure involving ion exchange chromatography, exclusion chromatography, and density gradient electrophoresis. The hormone has over 300 times the activity of NIH-FSH-Sl in the ovarian HCG-augmentation assay, thus confirming, in contradistinction to a number of other reports, the high potency estimates obtained by Roos and Gemzell for highly purified preparations of human follicle-stimulating hormone. The luteinizing hormone potency of this same preparation is less than 0.009 times that of NIH-LH-S1 in the ovarian ascorbic acid depletion assay. (Endocrinology84: 953, 1969)
