Abstract

With an increased demand for more careful assessment of teaching, administrators are incorporating student ratings of instructional effectiveness into their personnel decisions. Yet a variety of findings makes questionable the validity of this use of student ratings. The purpose of this paper is to review these findings to place the administrative use of student ratings into a proper perspective. Comparability of student ratings, sources of invalidity, and a proposal for the use of student rating data are discussed.
