Abstract
In all of the studied sections of the Dzirula Massif, the Aptian unconformably overlies the Barremian. The lack of certain beds and zones from the Barremian and Aptian section and, accordingly, the reduction in thickness of these stages, is probably connected with oscillating tectonic movements which were most intense near the arch of the Chkheri anticline, and to a lesser degree, in the Goresha-Kharagouli syncline. Comparable observations have been made in other regions of western Georgia (Abkhazia), the northern Caucasus and Dagestan, indicating the widespread nature of the Barremian-Aptian unconformity.
